What we look for

Four readings, per kitchen.

Every halal tag traces to something the establishment published — a certification listing, their own menu, or a stated policy — with the source and the date we read it on file — so you can open it and check us. Speaking with kitchens directly is the next tier we are building; when we have, the dish will say so, and not a day before. Certifications lapse — confirm the current one with the restaurant.

N° 001 · Source

Traced to a published source.

Every halal-tagged plate points to something the establishment published — a certifying body’s listing, its own menu, or a stated sourcing policy — stored with the URL and the date read. Where we can find no published source, the tag does not go on.

N° 002 · Kitchen vs. dish

Whole menu, or one plate.

Some kitchens source halal across the whole menu; others do it on specific plates. Both are surfaced, tagged clearly, so you can pick the room you want.

N° 003 · The room

A kitchen worth the trip.

We don’t list the nearest halal option as a default. We list the plate the masthead would cross town for — halal first, but never only.

N° 004 · Freshness

Re-read on a clock.

Suppliers change. Menus change. Every source carries the date it was read, and a tag whose source has gone past our review window stops being shown as verified and drops back to “worth asking.” That happens on the date, not when someone remembers.

Opening day

The list builds as the city opens.

Halal picks go live, kitchen by kitchen, as each sourcing note is recorded against a published source. Full ranked list opens with the app.

Listings populate at launch with open status checked against a published source, the date that source was read, and the masthead’s note per dish. No paid placements, ever.

These are theBEAT’s editorial sourcing notes, not a formal religious certification. Confirm current sourcing with the restaurant before ordering if it matters to you — suppliers and menus change.

Common questions

Asked, answered.

01

How does theBEAT verify halal sourcing?

Every halal tag traces to something the establishment published — a certifying body’s listing, the venue’s own menu, or a stated sourcing policy — recorded with its URL and the date we read it. We work from published sources so every claim is one you can open and check yourself. Speaking with kitchens directly is the tier we are building toward, and a dish will say so only once we have. Certifications lapse, so confirm the current halal certification with the restaurant before you order.

02

What’s the difference between a halal kitchen and a halal dish?

A halal kitchen sources all proteins halal across the menu. A halal dish is one specific plate at a mixed kitchen. Both surface on theBEAT, tagged so you can choose.

03

Which neighborhoods are covered?

DC’s four quadrants, plus Bethesda, Silver Spring, Rockville, Arlington, Alexandria, and Baltimore. Coverage grows weekly.

04

Is the halal filter free?

Yes. All religious, dietary, and lifestyle filters are free on every tier of theBEAT, including the free plan. No upgrade required.

05

Can I see only halal dishes on the rankings?

Yes. Toggle the Halal chip on the Rankings screen. The list rebuilds dish by dish, with the source note attached to each.
